Though most chemicals in cosmetics present limited or absolutely no threat, some have been associated with substantial health conditions, such as developmental delays and cancer. Chemicals in cosmetics enter the body through the skin, inhalation, ingestion and internal use, and cause the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals associated with cancer are found in food, water, and lots of other everyday goods. However, no category of consumer goods is subject to less government oversight than cosmetics, including Spice of Life (The Flavor). Although many of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics and personal care products almost certainly present little risk, being exposed to some is associated with significant health issues, such as cancer.
