Chemicals in cosmetics can enter the body through ingestion, inhalation, and internal use, and cause similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants associated with cancer can be found in water, food, and many other commonly used items. Yet, no type of consumer items is subject to less government direction than cosmetics, including Cafe (No added Spice, Shine Bright, Talk, Write, Read. Though most of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics in all likelihood pose very little risk, being exposed to some is associated with serious health concerns, such as cancer.
