Though many chemicals in cosmetics present very little or zero threat, several dozen have been linked to substantial health issues, including neurological harm and cancer. Cosmetic chemicals invade the body through the skin and inhalation, and lead to the same risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals linked to cancer can be found in water, food, and lots of other commonly used products. Yet, no category of consumer products is susceptible to less government inspection than cosmetics and other personal products, including my eyeshadow (shimmer) 3. While many of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics and personal care products in all likelihood present minimal risk, being exposed to a few has been linked to worrying health problems, including cancer.
