While many chemicals in cosmetic products present little or no risk, dozens have been linked with considerable medical conditions, such as cancer, reproductive and neurological harm, and developmental delays. Cosmetic chemicals can enter the body through internal use, the skin, and inhalation, and pose similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals associated with cancer are found in water, food, and lots of other commonly used products. But, no group of consumer products is subject to less government inspection than cosmetics and other personal care products, including my eyeshadow (shimmer) 7. While many of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics probably present minimal risk, exposure to a few is associated with worrying health disorders, such as cancer.
