Chemicals in cosmetics get into the body through inhalation, ingestion, and the skin, and pose similar risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals associated with cancer can be found in food and several other common products. However, no group of consumer products is subject to less government direction than cosmetics and other personal care products, including my eyeshadow (shimmer) 9. While many of the contaminants and chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products very likely pose minimal risk, your exposure to some has been associated with substantial health concerns, such as cancer.
