While the majority of chemicals in cosmetics present hardly any or no danger, several are associated with severe medical problems, including developmental delays and cancer. Cosmetic chemicals get into the body through the skin, inhalation, ingestion and internal use, and pose similar risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants linked to cancer can be found in food, water, and lots of other common products. However, no area of consumer products is subject to less government oversight than cosmetics, including my eyeshadow (shimmer) 11. Although most of the contaminants and chemicals in cosmetics very likely pose minimal risk, being exposed to some is linked to substantial health disorders, including cancer.
