Although many chemicals in beauty products present very little or no threat, dozens have been associated with significant medical conditions, including neurological harm and cancer. Chemicals in cosmetics can enter the body through the skin, inhalation, ingestion and internal use, and pose similar risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals linked to cancer are found in food, water, and lots of other everyday items. However, no kind of consumer items is subject to less government direction than cosmetics, including my eyeshadow (shimmer) 12. Although many of the chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products likely present minimal risk, being exposed to a few has been linked to serious health problems, including cancer.
