Though many chemicals in beauty products present slight or absolutely no threat, dozens are linked to significant medical problems, such as developmental delays and cancer. Chemicals in cosmetics get into the body through inhalation, the skin, and ingestion, and cause similar dangers as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals linked to cancer are found in water, food, and a lot of other ordinary goods.
