Cosmetic chemicals can enter the body through internal use, the skin, and inhalation, and pose the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants associated with cancer are found in water, food, and a lot of other commonly used goods. While many of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics and personal care products almost certainly pose very little risk, subjection to a few is associated with major health disorders, including cancer.
