Cosmetic chemicals can enter the body through the skin, inhalation, ingestion and internal use, and pose the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants linked to cancer are found in food and various other ordinary products. However, no group of consumer products is subject to less government management than cosmetics and other personal care products, including my highlighter 2. Although most of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics likely pose very little risk, exposure to some is linked to major health conditions, such as cancer.
