Though many chemicals in cosmetics present limited or no threat, several have been associated to considerable health issues, such as developmental delays and cancer. Cosmetic chemicals enter a person's body through the skin and inhalation, and cause the same risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants associated with cancer can be found in water, food, and various other ordinary items. But, no group of consumer items is susceptible to less government oversight than cosmetics, including my eyeshadow (shimmer) 19. While most of the chemicals in cosmetics in all likelihood present minimal risk, exposure to a few is associated with critical health disorders, including cancer.
