While many chemicals in beauty products and cosmetics pose very little or no threat, some have been associated with serious health problems, such as developmental delays and cancer. Cosmetic chemicals get into the body through the skin, inhalation, ingestion and internal use, and pose similar dangers as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants linked to cancer can be found in food and many other commonly used items. Yet, no kind of consumer items is subject to less government direction than cosmetics and other personal products, including my eyeshadow (shimmer) 19. While most of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics in all likelihood pose very little risk, being exposed to some has been linked to serious health problems, including cancer.
