While many chemicals in beauty products and cosmetics present slight or zero threat, several have been associated with substantial medical issues, such as cancer, reproductive and neurological harm, and developmental delays. Chemicals in cosmetics can enter the body through inhalation, ingestion, and the skin, and cause similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals linked to cancer are found in water, food, and many other ordinary products. But, no category of consumer products is subject to less government oversight than cosmetics and other personal care products, including my eyeshadow (shimmer) 24. Though most of the contaminants and chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products probably pose very little risk, subjection to some has been linked to major health concerns, such as cancer.
