Although many chemicals in beauty products present slight or zero threat, several are linked with serious health issues, such as cancer, reproductive and neurological harm, and developmental delays. Chemicals in cosmetics invade the body through internal use, the skin, and inhalation, and pose similar risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals associated with cancer can be found in food and many other ordinary items.
