Though most chemicals in beauty products and cosmetics present very little or no risk, dozens are linked to substantial medical issues, including cancer, and neurological harm. Chemicals in cosmetics get into the body through inhalation, the skin, and ingestion, and lead to the same risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals associated with cancer are found in water, food, and several other common products. However, no type of consumer products is subject to less government direction than cosmetics and other personal care products, including my eyeshadow (shimmer) 27. Though many of the chemicals in cosmetics probably present minimal risk, exposure to a few has been associated with significant health conditions, including cancer.
