Though most chemicals in cosmetics pose slight or zero risk, several are associated to substantial health conditions, such as cancer, and neurological harm. Chemicals in cosmetics get into the body through the skin, inhalation, ingestion and internal use, and lead to the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals linked to cancer are found in food and many other commonly used products. Yet, no area of consumer products is susceptible to less government inspection than cosmetics, including my eyeshadow (shimmer) 30. Though most of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics almost certainly pose minimal risk, being exposed to some has been linked to critical health disorders, such as cancer.
