Although most chemicals in beauty products pose very little or no risk, dozens have been associated to serious medical issues, including cancer, and neurological harm. Chemicals in cosmetics enter the body through the skin, inhalation, ingestion and internal use, and lead to the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals associated with cancer are found in food and many other ordinary products. Still, no category of consumer products is accountable to less government inspection than cosmetics, including my eyeshadow (shimmer) 37. Though most of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics almost certainly present very little risk, subjection to a few has been associated with substantial health disorders, including cancer.
