Chemicals in cosmetics gain entry to the body through inhalation, ingestion, and the skin, and lead to similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals linked to cancer can be found in food and many other ordinary goods. However, no classification of consumer goods is accountable to less government oversight than cosmetics and other personal care products, including my eyeshadow (shimmer) 39. Though many of the contaminants and chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products almost certainly present little risk, subjection to a few has been linked to major health problems, such as cancer.
