Though many chemicals in cosmetics present very little or no risk, dozens are associated to serious medical conditions, such as neurological harm and cancer. Cosmetic chemicals gain entry to a person's body through inhalation, ingestion, and the skin, and pose the same dangers as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants associated with cancer are found in food, water, and several other common items. Yet, no group of consumer items is susceptible to less government direction than cosmetics and other personal care products, including my eyeshadow (matte) 4.
