Although many chemicals in cosmetic products pose very little or no threat, several dozen are associated with considerable medical problems, such as cancer, and neurological harm. Cosmetic chemicals can enter a person's body through the skin and inhalation, and cause similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals associated with cancer can be found in water, food, and many other common items. Yet, no classification of consumer items is susceptible to less government oversight than cosmetics and other personal care products, including my eyeshadow (matte) 11. Though most of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics almost certainly pose little risk, exposure to a few is associated with substantial health problems, including cancer.
