Though most chemicals in cosmetics present slight or absolutely no threat, several have been associated with serious health conditions, such as developmental delays and cancer. Chemicals in cosmetics gain entry to a person's body through the skin and inhalation, and lead to the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals linked to cancer can be found in water, food, and a lot of other commonly used items. But, no category of consumer items is susceptible to less government inspection than cosmetics and other personal care products, including my eyeshadow (matte) 24. Although many of the chemicals in cosmetics in all likelihood present little risk, subjection to some is linked to serious health problems, including cancer.
