Although the majority of chemicals in beauty products pose little or no risk, several dozen have been linked to substantial medical problems, including developmental delays and cancer. Cosmetic chemicals gain entry to a person's body through the skin, inhalation, ingestion and internal use, and lead to the same risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants linked to cancer are found in food and many other ordinary products. However, no kind of consumer products is accountable to less government direction than cosmetics, including my eyeshadow (matte) 26. Though most of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics almost certainly pose little risk, exposure to a few has been linked to significant health issues, including cancer.
