While many chemicals in cosmetic products pose minimal or absolutely no threat, several are associated with serious medical issues, such as cancer, reproductive and neurological harm, and developmental delays. Cosmetic chemicals can enter the body through the skin and inhalation, and lead to the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals linked to cancer are found in food, water, and many other commonly used goods. Still, no area of consumer goods is accountable to less government oversight than cosmetics and other personal products, including my eyeshadow (matte) 26. While many of the contaminants and chemicals in cosmetics probably present minimal risk, exposure to a few has been linked to major health conditions, including cancer.
