Chemicals in cosmetics gain entry to the body through inhalation, the skin, and ingestion, and cause similar risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants linked to cancer are found in food, water, and several other ordinary goods. However, no area of consumer goods is susceptible to less government direction than cosmetics, including my eyeshadow (matte) 29. Although many of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics in all likelihood present minimal risk, exposure to some is linked to substantial health issues, including cancer.
