Although the majority of chemicals in cosmetics present very little or no threat, several dozen are associated with serious medical problems, such as developmental delays and cancer. Chemicals in cosmetics invade the body through inhalation, ingestion, and the skin, and pose the same risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants associated with cancer are found in food, water, and several other common goods. Yet, no category of consumer goods is susceptible to less government management than cosmetics and other personal products, including my eyeshadow (glitter) 11. Though most of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics most likely pose minimal risk, being exposed to a few has been associated with critical health concerns, such as cancer.
