Though the majority of chemicals in beauty products pose minimal or no threat, several dozen have been linked with significant medical conditions, such as cancer, reproductive and neurological harm, and developmental delays. Cosmetic chemicals get into a person's body through ingestion, inhalation, and internal use, and pose similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals associated with cancer are found in food and several other common items. But, no type of consumer items is susceptible to less government management than cosmetics and other personal care products, including my eyeshadow (glitter) 12. While most of the chemicals in cosmetics probably pose little risk, exposure to a few has been associated with serious health conditions, including cancer.
