While most chemicals in beauty products and cosmetics pose limited or no threat, dozens are linked to serious medical conditions, including cancer, and neurological harm. Chemicals in cosmetics gain entry to the body through the skin and inhalation, and lead to the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals linked to cancer are found in water, food, and several other commonly used items. Yet, no area of consumer items is accountable to less government management than cosmetics and other personal products, including my eyeshadow (glitter) 16. Though many of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics most likely pose minimal risk, being exposed to some is linked to critical health conditions, including cancer.
