While the majority of chemicals in cosmetics pose slight or zero threat, several dozen have been associated to significant health problems, including cancer, reproductive and neurological harm, and developmental delays. Chemicals in cosmetics get into the body through inhalation, the skin, and ingestion, and pose the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals linked to cancer are found in water, food, and various other ordinary items. Although most of the contaminants and chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products probably present little risk, being exposed to some is linked to critical health conditions, such as cancer.
