While many chemicals in cosmetics pose limited or no threat, several are linked with serious medical conditions, such as developmental delays and cancer. Cosmetic chemicals can enter a person's body through inhalation, the skin, and ingestion, and pose similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals associated with cancer can be found in water, food, and a lot of other common items.
