Though many chemicals in beauty products present very little or no risk, several dozen are associated with considerable medical problems, including developmental delays and cancer. Chemicals in cosmetics get into a person's body through the skin and inhalation, and lead to the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals associated with cancer can be found in food, water, and a lot of other common products. However, no type of consumer products is susceptible to less government oversight than cosmetics and other personal products, including Smoothed Over Lipstick (Lily). Although many of the contaminants and chemicals in cosmetics in all likelihood present little risk, being exposed to some is associated with substantial health problems, including cancer.
