While many chemicals in cosmetics present slight or absolutely no threat, dozens have been associated to significant medical problems, including cancer, and neurological harm. Cosmetic chemicals enter the body through the skin, inhalation, ingestion and internal use, and cause similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.
