While the majority of chemicals in beauty products pose minimal or zero threat, several dozen are associated with substantial medical problems, including cancer, reproductive and neurological harm, and developmental delays. Chemicals in cosmetics can enter the body through the skin and inhalation, and cause the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals associated with cancer can be found in food, water, and lots of other ordinary items. Yet, no classification of consumer items is susceptible to less government management than cosmetics, including Modern Renaissance (Shade Tempera). Though most of the contaminants and chemicals in cosmetics probably present very little risk, being exposed to some has been associated with serious health problems, including cancer.
