While many chemicals in beauty products present slight or no risk, dozens are linked to considerable health issues, including developmental delays and cancer. Cosmetic chemicals can enter the body through inhalation, ingestion, and the skin, and lead to the same risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals linked to cancer are found in food and several other common products.
