Though many chemicals in beauty products and cosmetics present very little or zero risk, several have been associated to serious health issues, such as cancer, and neurological harm. Cosmetic chemicals get into the body through ingestion, inhalation, and internal use, and pose similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.
