While many chemicals in beauty products and cosmetics pose little or no risk, several dozen have been linked with serious medical conditions, such as neurological harm and cancer. Chemicals in cosmetics get into the body through ingestion, inhalation, and internal use, and lead to similar risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals associated with cancer are found in food, water, and lots of other ordinary goods.
