Though many chemicals in cosmetic products present very little or absolutely no threat, several dozen have been associated with serious medical problems, including developmental delays and cancer. Cosmetic chemicals invade the body through internal use, the skin, and inhalation, and lead to the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals linked to cancer can be found in food, water, and many other commonly used products. However, no type of consumer products is susceptible to less government inspection than cosmetics, including Shampoo. Though many of the contaminants and chemicals in cosmetics almost certainly present little risk, being exposed to some has been linked to major health problems, such as cancer.
