Although most chemicals in cosmetics pose hardly any or zero risk, several have been linked with serious health issues, including cancer, and neurological harm. Cosmetic chemicals enter the body through the skin and inhalation, and pose the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants linked to cancer can be found in food and lots of other everyday items. But, no classification of consumer items is subject to less government oversight than cosmetics and other personal products, including un cover up. Although most of the chemicals in cosmetics probably present little risk, subjection to some is linked to major health conditions, including cancer.
