While many chemicals in cosmetics present slight or zero risk, several have been associated with serious medical issues, such as developmental delays and cancer. Chemicals in cosmetics get into a person's body through the skin, inhalation, ingestion and internal use, and cause similar risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals associated with cancer are found in food and many other commonly used products.
