Although most chemicals in beauty products pose slight or absolutely no danger, some have been associated with substantial health problems, such as cancer, reproductive and neurological harm, and developmental delays. Cosmetic chemicals invade the body through the skin, inhalation, ingestion and internal use, and lead to the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants associated with cancer can be found in food, water, and lots of other commonly used products. However, no classification of consumer products is subject to less government oversight than cosmetics and other personal care products, including Lip Gloss (Let's Have Some Plum). Though many of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics and personal care products almost certainly present very little risk, being exposed to a few is associated with significant health conditions, including cancer.
