Though most chemicals in cosmetics pose limited or zero threat, several dozen are associated with severe health conditions, such as cancer, reproductive and neurological harm, and developmental delays. Chemicals in cosmetics get into the body through inhalation, ingestion, and the skin, and pose the same risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals linked to cancer can be found in food, water, and lots of other common products. Yet, no area of consumer products is subject to less government inspection than cosmetics and other personal care products, including Lip Gloss (Fun & Fearless). Though many of the chemicals in cosmetics probably present little risk, subjection to some is linked to major health disorders, including cancer.
