While the majority of chemicals in cosmetic products pose little or zero risk, several are linked to severe medical problems, including cancer, and neurological harm. Chemicals in cosmetics gain entry to the body through inhalation, ingestion, and the skin, and cause similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals linked to cancer are found in food, water, and many other common products. Still, no category of consumer products is accountable to less government inspection than cosmetics, including Nail Polish (That's how we roll). Though many of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics probably pose very little risk, being exposed to a few has been linked to significant health disorders, including cancer.
