While many chemicals in beauty products and cosmetics present very little or absolutely no threat, dozens are associated with significant health problems, such as cancer, reproductive and neurological harm, and developmental delays. Chemicals in cosmetics can enter the body through the skin and inhalation, and cause similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals linked to cancer are found in water, food, and many other everyday goods. Still, no kind of consumer goods is subject to less government inspection than cosmetics and other personal products, including Eye Pigment (Violet-6). While most of the contaminants and chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products almost certainly present little risk, exposure to some has been linked to major health problems, such as cancer.
