Cosmetic chemicals can enter a person's body through the skin and inhalation, and lead to similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants linked to cancer are found in food and several other common goods. However, no area of consumer goods is subject to less government oversight than cosmetics, including Eye Pigment (Violet-6). Although most of the contaminants and chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products in all likelihood present very little risk, exposure to some is linked to significant health conditions, including cancer.
