While most chemicals in cosmetics present very little or no threat, dozens have been linked with substantial medical problems, such as developmental delays and cancer. Chemicals in cosmetics gain entry to the body through the skin and inhalation, and lead to similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals associated with cancer are found in food and several other commonly used products. Still, no sector of consumer products is accountable to less government oversight than cosmetics and other personal products, including Eye Pigment (5). While most of the chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products probably present little risk, being exposed to a few is associated with substantial health conditions, such as cancer.
