While many chemicals in beauty products pose little or absolutely no threat, several have been linked to significant medical issues, such as cancer, and neurological harm. Chemicals in cosmetics can enter the body through ingestion, inhalation, and internal use, and lead to similar risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants associated with cancer are found in food, water, and several other everyday items. However, no type of consumer items is accountable to less government direction than cosmetics and other personal care products, including Lip Gloss (FLAB-0048). Although many of the chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products probably present little risk, being exposed to some has been associated with major health disorders, such as cancer.
