While most chemicals in beauty products and cosmetics pose limited or zero threat, dozens have been linked to significant medical problems, including cancer, and neurological harm. Cosmetic chemicals get into the body through ingestion, inhalation, and internal use, and pose the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.
