Though many chemicals in cosmetics pose minimal or zero threat, several have been linked to severe medical issues, such as cancer, and neurological harm. Cosmetic chemicals can enter the body through the skin, inhalation, ingestion and internal use, and cause the same risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals associated with cancer can be found in food and various other everyday goods. However, no area of consumer goods is accountable to less government inspection than cosmetics and other personal products, including Eyeshadow (#53). Although many of the chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products most likely pose very little risk, exposure to a few is associated with critical health concerns, such as cancer.
