Though the majority of chemicals in cosmetics pose minimal or absolutely no danger, dozens have been linked to substantial medical conditions, including developmental delays and cancer. Chemicals in cosmetics get into the body through inhalation, the skin, and ingestion, and lead to the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals associated with cancer are found in water, food, and a lot of other everyday items.
