Although most chemicals in cosmetic products pose limited or absolutely no threat, several have been linked to serious health problems, such as cancer, and neurological harm. Chemicals in cosmetics get into the body through internal use, the skin, and inhalation, and cause the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants associated with cancer can be found in water, food, and many other commonly used products. However, no group of consumer products is subject to less government direction than cosmetics and other personal products, including Lip Gloss (Purr-Fect Purple). While many of the contaminants and chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products in all likelihood present little risk, subjection to a few has been associated with significant health issues, including cancer.
