Though many chemicals in cosmetic products pose very little or no risk, several dozen have been linked to significant health problems, such as cancer, and neurological harm. Cosmetic chemicals get into the body through the skin, inhalation, ingestion and internal use, and lead to similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants linked to cancer are found in food, water, and several other common products. Still, no group of consumer products is accountable to less government oversight than cosmetics and other personal care products, including Eyeshadow Refill (Pink Champagne shade). While many of the chemicals in cosmetics likely present very little risk, exposure to some is linked to serious health concerns, including cancer.
