Although the majority of chemicals in beauty products and cosmetics pose very little or absolutely no threat, several dozen have been associated with serious health problems, such as cancer, and neurological harm. Cosmetic chemicals get into the body through the skin and inhalation, and lead to similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals linked to cancer can be found in water, food, and lots of other common items.
