Though most chemicals in cosmetic products present very little or no threat, some have been associated to serious medical issues, such as cancer, and neurological harm. Cosmetic chemicals enter the body through internal use, the skin, and inhalation, and cause the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants linked to cancer are found in food, water, and various other ordinary items. Yet, no classification of consumer items is subject to less government oversight than cosmetics and other personal care products, including Nail Enamel (Pastels). Though most of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics almost certainly pose very little risk, being exposed to some has been linked to critical health issues, including cancer.
