Chemicals in cosmetics can enter the body through inhalation, ingestion, and the skin, and pose the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals linked to cancer can be found in water, food, and a lot of other commonly used products. Still, no category of consumer products is subject to less government oversight than cosmetics, including Healthy. Though many of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics almost certainly present little risk, exposure to a few is linked to serious health concerns, including cancer.
